The Word in the Bible

A brief reflection on the power of words in the Bible and in ordinary life.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 (ESV)

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Genesis 1:3 NIV

Therefore this is what the LORD says: “If you repent, I will restore you that you may serve me; if you utter worthy, not worthless, words, you will be my spokesman. Jeremiah 15:19 NIV

Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out. John 11:42-44 NIV

We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check. James 3:2 NIV

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Colossians 3:16 (ESV)

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Luke 21:33 NIV

一言既出,驷马难追。 Even four horses cannot take back what one has said.

得黄金百斤,不如得季布一诺。One hundred pounds of gold is not as good as a promise from someone who keeps his promises.
